Enstatite is composed of magnesium and magnesium iron silicates. Enstatite is a member of the pyroxene family of minerals.

History & Lore :
The name Enstatite is derived from the Greek word 'enstates', meaning “component”. It was first described by G.A. Kenngott in 1855.

Availability :
Enstatite is a relatively common mineral, but is rarely used for jewelry purposes. It is generally cut for gem connoisseurs and collectors rather than for the common consumer.

Enstatite is rated at 5.5 on Moh's Scale of Hardness making it relatively soft. When Enstatite is used for jewelry purposes it is best worn in pendants or earrings rather then rings. Enstatite is rarely used for jewelry purposes and because of this, it is not commonly known. Bronzite is a gemstone variety of Enstatite that exhibits a sub- metallic luster and a bronze-like coloration. There is also an emerald green variety of
Enstatite that is known as Chrome-Enstatite.

Enstatite Cat's Eye displays an amazing phenomena known as chatoyancy, also known in the gem trade as “the cat's eye effect”. The reason for this fascinating phenomenon is due to fine inclusions within the stone. When a light source is directed on these inclusions a bright strip of light appears, running perpendicular to the inclusions. This strip will then glide across the surface of the stone when turned over.

The most important value factor when purchasing Enstatite Cat's Eye gemstones is the strength and sharpness of the eye. The eye of the stone must have a fine line running through it that is both distinct and easily recognized.

Common Cuts :
Enstatite Cat's Eye are most commonly and almost exclusively cut into cabochons. This is because a tall, round cut is required to maximize the striking Cat's Eye effect most brilliantly.
